Summer of Sunshine and Sanity: A doctor’s prescription for Healthy Aging

Summer is in full swing, and it’s a time for rejuvenation, relaxation, and reconnection. As a retired physician and dedicated advocate for healthy aging, I believe that taking a break from the daily grind is essential for maintaining physical, mental and social well-being. This summer, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to prioritize these essential elements by spending quality time with loved ones and exploring new and fun places. Melissa and I have planned 60 days of fun and relaxation. So far, we have completed two weeks and I want to share what we have done so far.

The Power of Disconnecting

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in work, responsibilities, and the constant stream of digital distractions. However, taking a step back and disconnecting from technology is crucial for stress reduction and mental clarity. By immersing myself in family time, travel adventures, and simply enjoying the present moment, I’ve experienced a renewed sense of peace and purpose.

The 5 Key Elements of Healthy Aging

While indulging in fun and relaxation, I haven’t forgotten about the fundamental keys of healthy aging. These five elements—physical activity, eating well, managing stress, getting adequate sleep, and socialization—are essential for thriving at any age. The earlier one starts, the better off you will be.

  • Activity: Exploring new cities, hiking through stunning landscapes, and playing with energetic grandchildren have kept us moving and active. Physical activity is not only beneficial for maintaining a healthy weight but also for boosting mood, improving cognitive function, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

  • Eating Well: While on the road, we’ve made a conscious effort to savor delicious and nutritious meals. From fresh farm food at LuLu’s in Los Angeles (one of the first farm to table restaurants in the US) to Chicago’s wide variety of nutritious, mostly plant based healthy options, we’ve indulged in a variety of flavors while prioritizing whole foods and balanced nutrition, including Twisted Plants just outside of Milwaukee.

  • Managing Stress: Spending time with loved ones, enjoying beautiful scenery, and practicing mindfulness techniques have helped us manage stress effectively. Laughter, shared experiences, and simply being present in the moment are powerful stress busters.
  • Getting Adequate Sleep: Despite the excitement of travel and family gatherings, we’ve made sleep a priority. Regular sleep patterns are essential for cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.
  • Socialization: Connecting with family and friends has been a highlight of my summer. Sharing laughter, stories, and creating lasting memories has enriched my life in countless ways. Social interaction is vital for mental and emotional health.

A Summer to Remember

Our recent adventures in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dollywood have been filled with unforgettable moments. From experiencing the vibrant energy with family in LA and Disneyland to the iconic skyline and food options of Chicago and the enchanting atmosphere of Dollywood, every destination has offered unique opportunities for exploration, relaxation, and connection.

Most importantly, we’ve had the privilege of spending precious time with my loved ones, creating memories that will last a lifetime. Surrounded by the joy of seven grandchildren, the support of our children and their spouses, and the warmth of extended family, we feel incredibly blessed. The second stage of our trip takes us to Fon du Lac, Wisconsin for a month of REAL relaxation, reflection, creating, and enjoying more tolerable temperatures.

As summer winds down for most, we will have two more weeks of relaxation and visiting friends as we head back south.

I encourage you to reflect on your own well-being and make time for activities that nourish your body, brain, and soul. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a family reunion, or simply spending quality time in nature, prioritize experiences that promote relaxation, connection, and healthy aging.

Remember, the Power of 5—activity, eating well, managing stress, getting adequate sleep, and socialization—is the foundation for a fulfilling and purposeful life at any age. Let’s make healthy aging a priority, one summer at a time.

To a long and healthy life,
